“You get what you pay for” is a quote that many believe in and swear by. When it comes to business Internet speed, are you really getting what you pay for?

What is business Internet speed? And how is it measured?

Internet speed is measured in megabits-per-second or Mbps.

Like I said earlier: “You get what you pay for.” Typically, the higher the Mbps speed, the higher the cost. Makes sense right?

  • The average cost of 3 to 6 Mbps is $34.99 per month
  • The average cost of 30 Mbps is $54.97 per month
  • The average cost of 100 to 150 Mbps is $70.00 per month

Service Providers may offer additional or varying speeds (i.e. 20 Mbps, 60 Mbps, 210 Mbps). The speeds listed above are just the most common.

Which speed is right for you?

Now that you know what to expect when you get your first bill, you have to choose which speed is right for you! The most important factors to take into consideration:

1.  LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!!!

Where your office is located will have the greatest impact on the service providers available to you.

Keep in mind, service and availability can vary wildly even within a small radius, especially if you work out in the boonies.

2.  Number of Devices On Your Network

If your employees use multiple devices at once (including computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones) or you want to offer guest access, you’re going to want a higher speed.

3.  Bandwidth Pressure

If you need to download or upload a lot of information in your business, you should look at AT LEAST a 60 Mbps download speed.  Downloading and uploading take up a lot of bandwidth, and will slow down devices throughout your office.

4.  Packages

What other services do you need for your business? If you are trying to purchase Internet AND phone service for your business, you may be able to get a deal on both.

However, if you are only looking to get Internet, then your biggest concerns will be your location and options from different providers.
